Richard is the son of Alice, a homemaker, and Samuel Kind, a jeweler originally from Princeton, New Jersey. His family traces its roots to Russian Jewish immigrants who settled in New York . Growing up in both Trenton and Yardley, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1974, then earned a Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1978, where he was active in Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and joined the famed Second City improv troupe in Chicago .
